Buying your ticket on the bus

New to the bus

If you haven’t travelled by bus before, here are a few tips for a simple journey.

  1. Plan your journey so you know which bus and route are right for you.
  2. Make sure you take a note of the bus number.
  3. When your bus is approaching the bus stop, just put out your hand so the driver knows to stop and let you on board.
  4. When you get on the bus, ask the driver for a single ticket to your destination.
  5. Your fare will be automatically capped at £2 and you can pay by cash, contactless or Apple/Google Pay. Don’t forget to take your ticket from the machine and keep it for the whole journey.
  6. Once your payment is accepted, take your seat and enjoy the journey.
  7. When you’re approaching your destination bus stop, press any of the stop buttons located around the bus. When the bus comes to a stop, thank your driver as you get off.

Not your first rodeo

If you’re a regular bus user, buy your single ticket as normal and it’ll be automatically capped at £2. So, all you need to do is let the driver know where you’re going, and you’ll be on your way.

Buying on the Stagecoach Bus App

New to the app

You can buy your single ticket on our app rather than the bus for an even easier boarding experience.

  1. Make sure you download the Stagecoach Bus App first.
  2. Once you have the app, you can plan your journey, track your bus and buy your ticket all in the same place.
  3. To buy your ticket all you need to do is click on the menu button and go to ‘Get your ticket’ and tap on the ‘Buy tickets’ tab.
  4. If you’ve set your location when you downloaded the app, your tickets for your area will show in the ‘Singles’ tab. If you haven’t set your location, you’ll need to select a location in the ‘Tickets in’ section. You’ll now be able to select singles and add your single ticket to your basket and then follow the payment instructions.
  5. Once you’ve bought your ticket, you can view it in the ‘My tickets’ tab.
  6. Your ticket is nearly ready to use. You’ll need to activate your ticket when you’re boarding the bus. You’ll need internet connection to do this, and it’ll be active for 20 minutes. Please make sure you allow the right amount of time between activating your ticket and travelling and that there’s enough space on your chosen service for you travel.
  7. When you get on the bus, please show the driver your activated ticket and take your seat.

Already used the Stagecoach Bus App?

If you have bought on the app before the new £2 single capped fares will be in the ‘Buy tickets’ tab. Please be aware the single fare tickets will only be active 20 minutes after you’ve activated it.

*Exclusions and variations apply  - This excludes journeys within the Manchester area which are governed by the TfGM £2 single fare scheme. Inter-urban coach services, scholars services, contract routes and some tendered services are excluded from the scheme. Cross-border journeys into Scotland and Wales are valid under the scheme for journeys starting in England.

The scheme is valid from 1st January to 31st December 2024. At the end of the scheme £2 single tickets will no longer be valid and any unactivated tickets will be automatically cancelled and your payment refunded.
