Stagecoach Yorkshire Performance

At Stagecoach Yorkshire we are working together with partners to deliver a safe, punctual and reliable service that our customers expect and deserve.

Delivering buses is a team effort, our internal teams of drivers, supervisors, cleaners and engineers work together every day to deliver the best possible service for our customers.

We also work in partnership with local authorities, including the Mayoral Combined Authorities or South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and soon East Midlands as we rely on well maintained and good quality highways, bus stops and bus interchanges provided by the authorities to run our bus network.

There are two elements to our service performance – reliability and punctuality.

  • Reliability – this is a percentage measure of how many advertised journeys we operated. Our target is 99.5%.
  • Punctuality – this is a percentage measure of how many times the bus departed a timing point bus stop within five minutes of the advertised time. Our target is 95%

Reliability can be impacted by a range of factors from driver availability to more buses than usual requiring repair.

It can take twelve weeks to recruit and train a new bus driver and like any business we can experience days where more people are absent due to illness or personal reasons so each of our depots has standby drivers available to cover.

Each of our buses is serviced by a highly qualified engineer every 28-days and undergoes an MOT annually. We have a fleet of spare buses to cover for vehicles undergoing servicing, repair and MOT preparation.

Punctuality can be impacted by a huge range of factors, usually outside of the control of the bus operator. We hate being late and will do everything in our control to run on time. When we are late it is usually for reasons outside of our control.

Buses, like all traffic on our roads, can be delayed by road works and diversions, poorly parked vehicles and vehicles blocking junctions, traffic lights and events.

We take average journey times to develop our timetables but we are seeing more and more a high degree of variability in traffic conditions, for instance, there is less general traffic on the roads during a Monday morning peak than the same time on a Tuesday. A home football match game can cause significant delay for several hours but football matches start times increasingly vary throughout the season.

We work with local authorities to campaign for highways improvements. Some highways improvements will improve traffic flows for all road users, for instance lane rental for road works, policing of moving traffic offences and improving traffic light sequencing.

Some highways improvements will prioritise bus users over other road users such as bus lanes. Where bus lanes are used effectively, it means overall more people get to their destination on time as the bus can carry up to 80 people in each vehicle.

Jargon buster:

Advertised journey – journeys that are advertised in our timetables available to members of the public. The reliability measure is calculated based on the number of scheduled miles operated.

Timing point – A timing point are the bus stops listed in our timetables, not every bus stop is a timing point. Main bus stops are usually designated timing points.
