Did you know that Stagecoach runs a four-year programme for apprentices? Apprentices can join the schemes at several different locations in the UK, starting in August or September each year. The first three years are spent learning in the depot and attending a specialist training college in either Wolverhampton or Glasgow (depending on home location). At the end of the first three years, apprentices gain their Advanced Apprenticeship (or Modern Apprenticeship in Scotland) in Bus and Coach Engineering Maintenance.
The fourth year of the programme has been specially designed by Stagecoach UK Bus. It’s approved and certified by the Institute of the Motor Industry. During the course, apprentices continue to develop the skills that they’ve already learned by attending in-house courses and manufacturer’s technical courses.
During their apprenticeship, each apprentice is paired with a fully trained mentor to guide them through the programme.
As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we will be showcasing one of our Engineering Apprentices who works at our Aberhill depot. Our 1st Year Apprentice, Owen Cassidy, shares his experience so far at Stagecoach, what attracted him to the role and what he hopes to achieve in the future.
Firstly, Owen spoke about what attracted him to the role at Stagecoach. Owen said:
“I’ve always had an interest in the engineering trade and have a big passion for repairing vehicles.”
Owen went on to describe how he has found the job so far:
“I’ve found it really enjoyable. Each day has a new challenge and there is always new things to learn.”
To finish, Owen went on to discuss what he hopes to achieve in the future:
“In the future, I hope to achieve the master tech qualification and even more into management within the company.”
