Everything You Can Do With Your Under 22 Travel Pass

25 May 2023

As part of Scottish Bus Week, we are showcasing the Under 22 Free Travel scheme where anyone under the age of 22 can apply to take the bus for completely free. If you don’t already have your pass and are not sure about getting one, we will list some reasons to get one and some nice places in East Scotland you can get to using the pass.

All young people and children aged between 5 and 21 living in Scotland can apply for a free bus travel card.

The scheme is an initiative from the Scottish Government and with support from Transport Scotland young people and children can travel for free on all buses across the country.

If you apply for the scheme or your child applies for it, you/they will need a new or replacement National Entitlement Card (NEC) or a Young Scot National Entitlement Card (Young Scot NEC) before they can travel for free.

You can apply for free bus travel here. Got any further questions you can view our FAQ page.

Before getting into where you can go with the pass, here are some benefits –

Benefits

  • Save money – Free bus travel will give you more money to spend on the big things that you like or help you save up for something more expensive.
  • Travel further – Whether you need to travel for work, or just want to travel around the country things are made easier by getting an Under 22 pass.
  • Go Green – Going by bus will take another car off the road and reduce emissions and congestion resulting in helping the climate emergency.
  • Discover Freedom – You don’t need to ask your parents, guardians, auntie or uncles, or other family members or friends for a lift anywhere as you can just jump on the bus to get to your destination.

What You Can Do

  • Meeting friends – Want to catch up with your friends that may stay further away from you? One of the best ways to do that is to jump on a bus and have extra money in your pocket while you do so.
  • Going to the shops – Whether you need to go food shopping, clothes shopping or just window shopping you would be able to have a little more money in your pocket to get a little extra if your travel didn’t cost a penny.
  • Sightseeing – There are loads of sights and sounds in the Highlands, from Inverness to Orkney and you can go and see them all without having to worry about spending any money on getting there.
  • Playing or watching sports – Take the stress out of getting to your chosen sport that you take part in or going to watch your favourite sport by making it a little less expensive by taking out the cost of getting to the venue.
  • Going to an event – Whether it is a music event, an event at the theatre or if you are going to a climate change event you will be taking cars off the road, and not only will you be helping your pocket, but you will be helping the climate emergency.
  • Hobbies – If you have a favourite hobby or a list of different hobbies like maybe going to an Escape Room then take the cost of getting there away.
  • Going to work, college or school – If you need to get to work or college by public transport then take the cost of getting there away. If you don’t get a school bus pass, then it might be more expensive but an Under 22 pass would sort that.

There are lots of benefits and a lot more opportunities that have opened up thanks to the Under 22 Free Travel Scheme that you should definitely take advantage of. If you already have a pass and plan on taking the bus in the near future, then you can plan your journey here.
