Tramlines Festival - Travel Advice and Information

11 Jul 2023

If you're heading to Tramlines on the 21, 22 or 23 July, we've pulled together some useful information to help make your journey to and from Hillsborough Park as simple as possible.

Tramstops in the Hillsborough area

The closest tram stops are Hillsborough Park and Leppings Lane tram stops which are on the Yellow route. If you're heading to the event by tram, services will be very busy so please allow plenty of time.

When leaving the event, signage within the park will direct you to the managed tram exit for Leppings Lane tram stop. Please do not attempt to use other exits or other tram stops as you won’t be able to board and may experience a very long wait.

During the day and until around 2200 on the 21 and 22 July and until around 2100 on 23 July, Blue route trams will also operate to Malin Bridge, serving Hillsborough tram stop, which is just a short walk from Hillsborough Park.

Both Yellow and Blue route services operate every 12 minutes until around 1900, and around every 30 minutes thereafter. You can plan your journey here.

All trams after the event will only pick up at Leppings Lane, where queuing systems and ticket checks will be in place.

Service changes

The normal advertised frequencies will operate on Yellow and Blue routes. On Friday and Saturday this is every 12 minutes (6 minutes combined) until around 1900.  After around 1900 on these days, both routes operate every 30 minutes, offering a combined 15 minute frequency between the City Centre and Hillsborough. On Sunday both routes operate every 20 minutes until around 1800 (10 minutes combined) and every 30 minutes (15 minutes combined) from around 1800.

Between around 2200 and 2300 on 21 and 22 July and between around 2100 and 2200 on 23 July, the regular timetabled Yellow and Blue service trams will terminate at Shalesmoor. The only services operating between Shalesmoor and outer terminus will be event special trams which will serve Leppings Lane city bound tram stop only. This means the following tram stops are expected to be closed during these times;

  • Middlewood
  • Malin Bridge
  • Leppings Lane (towards Middlewood)
  • Hillsborough Park (both directions)
  • Hillsborough (both directions)
  • Bamforth Street (both directions)
  • Langsett Primrose View (both directions)
  • Infirmary Road (both directions)

This is due to local road closures that will be in place and due to the large volumes of pedestrians overwhelming the roads on which trams operate. Trams will only operate through congested areas where it is agreed as being safe to do so between ourselves, the Police and the event organisers. As such, delays and longer journey times are likely.

Wait times at the end of each day

At the end of the event, customers wishing to use the tram should expect large queues for trams and wait times from the queue to leave the park to reaching the tram stop could exceed 60 minutes at the busiest times. Please be patient and respectful towards staff and stewards - it will be busy but we will get everyone moving as quickly as we can when it’s safe to do so.

Network Rail Industrial Action - Saturday 22 July

Industrial action will affect rail services on Saturday 22 July. Sheffield train station will be closed from around 2000 on this date. For more information on changes to train services visit nationalrail.co.uk. Tram Train services are not affected and will operate as advertised.

Ticketing

We accept cash and card payments (including Apple Pay and Google Pay) on all services. If you plan to travel to and from the event on tram, the single fare is £2 and the return fare is £4. The Stagecoach bus app also offer a range of daily and weekly tickets for anyone making multiple journeys. Single tickets sold on the Stagecoach app are not valid for use on tram.

Whilst we welcome payment by card or contactless, our ticket machines require a 4G connection to authorise payments, therefore mobile network congestion which can occur at these types of event may mean some transactions will be slower to process than normal. To avoid any delays, please consider buying a return ticket on your outward journey or you may prefer to pay cash - having the correct change will help keep queues moving too.

Customers who already have valid tram tickets when leaving the event may be given priority to help reach the tram stop more quickly, if possible to do so. Staff and stewards will be on hand to help guide and offer information.
