Travel for £2 with the Scottish Government Fare Cap

 

Bus travel for just £2? The Scottish Government Fare Cap is coming to Ayrshire, Glasgow and Lanarkshire.

Leave the car at home, save money on travel and enjoy great value bus journeys for just £2.

From 7 September 2026, eligible single bus journeys across the Stagecoach South Scotland network in Ayrshire, Glasgow and Lanarkshire will cost no more than £2 when purchased on board the bus.

The offer aims to make bus travel more affordable and accessible, helping more people connect with work, education, essential services and leisure opportunities across the region by bus.

This is your chance to cut travel costs, travel more often and get more out of every journey for just £2.

 

What this means for you:

  • Single adult and child fares across Ayrshire, Glasgow and Lanarkshire now cost no more than £2.
  • Single fares that already cost less than £2 will remain at the lower price.
  • If your journey crosses the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) boundary, the £2 cap only applies within the SPT area. The normal single fare will apply beyond the boundary.

The longer the journey, the bigger the saving

If your single fare is already under £2, you'll continue to pay the lower fare. But for many longer local journeys across Ayrshire and Glasgow, the new £2 fare cap could significantly reduce the cost of travel.

Customers travelling between Ayr and Glasgow will pay just £2 instead of £10.10.

Already a regular bus traveller? 

From 8pm on 6 September, single and return tickets will no longer be available to buy on the Stagecoach Bus App across Ayrshire, Glasgow, Dumfries & Galloway and Lanarkshire.

You'll still be able to buy a single and return ticket from your driver when you board. Eligible journeys will be capped at £2, and where a journey isn't covered by the £2 Fare Cap, your driver will advise you of the correct fare before travel.

Our great-value DayRider and MegaRider tickets will still be available on the Stagecoach app at the same price and could offer the best value if you're making multiple journeys in a day, week or month.

Which ticket is right for me?
 

Buy a £2 Single if...

  • You're making a one-way journey.
  • You're making one or two journeys in a day.
  • You only travel occasionally.
  • You want to pay as you go.
 

A DayRider may be better value if...

  • You're making more than two journeys in one day.
  • You're planning to travel out and back, plus make additional trips.
  • You're spending the day shopping, sightseeing or visiting friends and family.
 

A MegaRider may be better value if...

  • You travel regularly during the week.
  • You commute to work or education most days.
  • You use the bus several times each week.
 

Travelling as a group?

  • A Group ticket could work out cheaper than buying individual £2 single tickets, depending on the number of people travelling together.

 

If you have a valid National Entitlement Card (NEC), you can continue to travel for free on Stagecoach services as normal if you're under 22, over 60, or eligible for concessionary travel due to a disability.


New to bus travel and not sure what to do?

Don't worry, we're here to help. Simply tell the driver where you'd like to travel and they'll help you with the right ticket. If you're unsure where to get off, let the driver know when you board. Travelling by bus is easy, and our team will be happy to help you along the way.

  1. Plan your journey using the Stagecoach Bus App. Simply enter where you're travelling from and where you'd like to go, and we'll show you which bus to catch and where to get on and off.
  2. When your bus approaches, hold out your hand to let the driver know you'd like the bus to stop.
  3. Once the bus has stopped and customers have got off, board the bus and tell the driver where you'd like to travel to.
  4. Buy your ticket, then find a seat and enjoy your journey.
  5. When you're ready to get off, press the bell to let the driver know you'd like to stop at the next bus stop.

What is the £2 Bus Fare Cap?

The £2 Bus Fare Cap is a Scottish Government Interim Scheme, that means you'll pay no more than £2 for an eligible single bus journey within the SPT area. Journeys that already cost less than £2 will stay at their lower price.
 

When does it start?

The interim scheme launches on Wednesday 7 September 2026.
 

Why is the Scottish Government introducing a £2 fare cap?

Which areas are covered?

The Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) area includes:

Which tickets are included?

The £2 fare cap applies to eligible single tickets only. If your single fare would normally cost more than £2, you'll only pay £2.

Which tickets are not included?

The fare cap doesn’t apply to Adult, Child and Student:

Return, DayRider, MegaRider, Flexible, Group and any other ticket type that isn't a single ticket.
 

Can I buy a £2 single on the Stagecoach app?

No. The £2 capped single fare is currently only available when purchased on board the bus. You can still pay quickly and easily using contactless.
 

Will I still be able to buy single or return tickets on the Stagecoach app?

No. Standard single and return tickets will not continue to be available through the app, but can be purchased on the bus. 
 

What if my fare is already less than £2?

Nothing changes. You'll continue to pay the existing lower fare.

Does the £2 cap apply to all journeys?

No. The fare cap only applies to eligible journeys that are entirely within the SPT area. Some longer journeys that cross the SPT boundary will be charged partly at the normal fare.

 

For cross-boundary services such as Stagecoach 358 / 360, X74, X24, X24A and X27 services, the £2 fare cap applies to the part of the journey within the SPT area. Any travel beyond the SPT boundary is charged at the normal fare.
 

What about free bus travel?

Customers with a valid National Entitlement Card can continue to travel free as normal, including:

  • Under 22s
  • Over 60s
  • Eligible disabled customers
 

Will the £2 single always be the best value?

Not always. If you're making multiple journeys in a day or travelling regularly, a DayRider, MegaRider or Group ticket may offer better value. Our drivers can help you choose the ticket that best suits your journey.
 

Is this permanent?

No. The £2 fare cap is currently a Scottish Government Interim Scheme. The results of the scheme will help inform decisions on future fares policy.
 

How do I get a refund on a ticket I’ve bought? 

If you think you're eligible for a refund under our Refund Terms and Conditions, please contact our Customer Services team and we'll be happy to review your request.

 

How to request a refund

  • App tickets: Tap the ‘Cancel ticket’ button on your mobile ticket in the Stagecoach Bus App if it is unactivated.
  • Online tickets: Log in to your Stagecoach Account, go to ‘My tickets’, select ‘Show details’, and choose ‘Cancel online’.
  • Other tickets: Fill out the Stagecoach Refund Request Form
