Guide to Stagecoach North East tickets

Tickets for adults

Passengers aged 16 and above pay the full price adult fare. If you are aged between 16 and 21, you may be able to get cheaper tickets – see our tickets for young people.

We have a wide range of great value tickets available.

 

Single tickets 

Single tickets are perfect if you only want to make one journey a day.

 

dayrider tickets

A dayrider ticket gives you 1 day’s unlimited travel in your chosen ticket zone or zones. 

Family dayrider tickets are also available in some areas and offer unlimited travel for up to two adults plus three children. 

You can share dayrider tickets with your family and friends when you're not using them.

 

megarider tickets 

You can use your weekly bus ticket for unlimited travel in your chosen area. You can choose more than one zone to travel in and how long you want your ticket for.

You can even choose to pay for your ticket by a monthly recurring payment and add it to your StagecoachSmart card.

 

Day Rover tickets

A Day Rover ticket gives you 1 day's unlimited travel on all sorts of public transport in Tyne and Wear.  You can use any buses from Stagecoach, Arriva and Go North East, as well as the Metro, trains and the Shields Ferry. Find out more about Day Rover.

 

SmartZone tickets 

SmartZone tickets  give you unlimited travel in your chosen travel zone on Stagecoach, Go North East and Arriva buses. You can choose from Newcastle, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland, Teesside, Tees Valley or Hartlepool.

 

explorer ticket 

Get 1 day’s unlimited travel in the North East with our Explorer ticket. You’ll be able to travel from the Scottish Borders down to Richmond in the south and Carlisle in the west.

You’ll be able to use it on:

• Stagecoach Cumbria Route 685 (Carlisle to Newcastle)
• trains between Newcastle and Sunderland
• Shields Ferry

You’ll also be able to use it on local bus services operated by:

• Arriva North East
• Go North East
• Stagecoach North East
• Travelsure
• Tyne & Wear Metro

Transfare tickets 

Need to make a journey using a combination of the bus, Metro or ferry in Tyne and Wear? Our Transfare tickets allow you to buy just one ticket. 

 

Network One tickets 

Network One tickets give you unlimited travel in Tyne and Wear on all kinds of public transport.   You can use any buses from Stagecoach, Arriva and Go North East, as well as the Metro, trains and the Shields Ferry. Find out more about Network One tickets.

Tickets for children 

Under 5

Up to four children under 5 years old can travel for free when accompanied by a responsible passenger. These children can’t:

• take a seat that a paying passenger might need
• stay in a buggy in an unsuitable place on the bus

Children under 5 who can’t travel for free, can travel for about half to two-thirds the cost of most adult fares.

5–15 year olds

Single tickets 

In Tyne and Wear, children aged 5 to 15 years can usually travel for a discounted concessionary fare. You’ll need to show your Nexus under 16 Pop card  to buy a concessionary child single ticket.

Children without a Nexus pop card can still travel at a discounted price by asking for a Stagecoach child single ticket, in Tyne and Wear, Hartlepool and Teesside.

   

Tyne and Wear CAT U16 day ticket 

The CAT U16 day ticket will give under 16s unlimited travel in Tyne and Wear on all public transport. This includes travel on all operator’s buses, Metro, rail and ferry.  You can buy a CAT U16 Day ticket from your bus driver.

A Nexus under 16 Card must be shown in order to buy and use this ticket.   Click here to apply for the Nexus under 16 Pop card .

 

Child Hartlepool dayrider tickets

Our child dayrider tickets are valid for one day's unlimited travel on all Stagecoach buses within Hartlepool. If you’re travelling outside the borough, you’ll need to buy a child dayrider Plus ticket.

You can share dayrider tickets with your family and friends when you're not using them.

 

 

Child explorer tickets

Children aged 15 or under can get great value with our explorer ticket. It’ll give you one day’s unlimited travel throughout the North East.

You’ll be able to use it on:

• Stagecoach Cumbria Route 685 (Carlisle to Newcastle)
• trains between Newcastle and Sunderland
• Shields Ferry

You’ll also be able to use it on local bus services operated by:

• Arriva North East
• Go North East
• Shields Ferry
• Stagecoach North East
• Travelsure
• Tyne & Wear Metro
• Weardale Motor Services

Family tickets are also available for up to two adults and three children.

 

Tickets for young people (16–21 years old) 

Young people can use a number of different tickets:

• anyone under 19 can get discounted travel with a Stagecoach Under 19 ID card  
• full time students at university in the North East can buy a student bus ticket.
  
• any type of adult ticket
• TNE U21 £1 single ticket and U21 £3 day tickets are valid for travel across Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Northumberland. This product is available on all local bus operators across these areas, and is provided in partnership with NECA (North East Combined Authority), with the financial assistance of HM Government's BSIP scheme. You may be required to show ID when purchasing and using this product.
  
• TVCA U21 up to £1 single ticket and U21 £3 day tickets are valid for travel across Tees Valley. This product is available on all local bus operators across these areas, and is provided in partnership with TVCA (Tees Valley Combined Authority), with the financial assistance of HM Government's BSIP scheme. You may be required to show ID when purchasing and using this product.   
   

Students 

unirider tickets 

If you’re a full time student at a university in the North East, you can buy our great value student bus ticket . It’ll give you unlimited travel on Stagecoach North East buses.

To buy and use a unirider ticket, you'll need a college or university student photo ID card. The name on your ID card needs to match the name on your ticket.

Unirider tickets bought online are now loaded onto a StagecoachSmart student card. Top up easily online and simply tap your card onto the reader when you board the bus.

 

 

U19 tickets 

Anyone aged five to 18 can get our U19 ID card for discounted travel in the North East.

You’ll have to prove you’re U19 when you buy your ticket and get on the bus. You can use any of these ID cards:

• Stagecoach  U19 ID Card 
• Nexus  Under 16 Pop card 
• Network One  Young Persons ID card 
• Arriva  Teen card

TNE Under 21/U22 tickets

Young persons aged 21 years and under are also entitled to purchase U21 £1 single tickets or £3 day ticket, valid across Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Northumberland. TVCA Under 21/U22 tickets

Young persons aged 21 years and under are also entitled to purchase U21 up to £1 single tickets or £3 day ticket, valid across Tees Valley. These products provided in partnership with TVCA, with the financial assistance of HM Government's BSIP scheme. 

You may be required to show ID when purchasing and using this product. Accepted forms of ID include:

• Stagecoach Under 19 ID card, Arriva Teen card, driving licence (inc. provisional), passport, student ID, NUS Extra/ TOTUM card, PASS card or Young Persons ID Card.

           

Tickets for families 

Family dayrider tickets 

Family dayrider tickets are available in Newcastle, South Shields, Sunderland, Teesside and Hartlepool, and offer unlimited travel for up to two adults plus three children*. You can share dayrider tickets with your family and friends when you're not using them.

 

Family explorer ticket 

For a great family day out anywhere in the North East, you can buy a family explorer ticket. It’s valid for two adults and up to three children*. Adults and children using a family ticket must travel together at all times.

You’ll be able to use it on:

• Stagecoach Cumbria Route 685 (Carlisle to Newcastle)
• trains between Newcastle and Sunderland
• Shields Ferry

You’ll also be able to use it on local bus services operated by:

• Arriva North East
• Go North East
• Shields Ferry
• Stagecoach North East
• Travelsure
• Tyne & Wear Metro
• Weardale Motor Services

Concessionary bus pass holders (seniors and disabled) 

Apply for your pass 

You can apply for a pass by contacting your local council, or you can apply online:

Apply online for an older person’s bus pass.

Apply online for a disabled person’s bus pass .

 

When you can use your pass

Normally, you can travel after 09:30 until 23:00 on weekdays and all day at weekends and bank holidays. Some local councils     have different rules on when you can use your pass.

Where you can use your pass

You can travel for free anywhere in England, including London on local bus services.

It’s not valid for journeys within Scotland or Wales. 

Free travel is not available on tourist buses or coach services like megabus.com and National Express.

If you need assistance from our drivers, you can get a Bridge Card for Tyne and Wear or Hartlepool and Teesside. 

      

How to use your pass on the bus 

Once you've received your concessionary bus pass, you can start using it straight away. Just hold it against the reader on the ticket machine by the driver.

You won’t need to tell the driver your destination. Wait for the green light or listen for a beep - then remove your pass, take your receipt, and find a seat. 

A pass doesn't give you any priority over other passengers. 

     

 What to do if you lose your pass 

Unfortunately, we’re not able to give you free travel if you don’t have your pass with you. If you lose your pass, you’ll need to contact the local council that issued it to you for a replacement.

Jobseekers 

We offer half price single tickets to jobseekers.  To qualify, you must have a valid Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount card.

Animals

Guide dogs and assistance dogs can travel for free at all times.

Other dogs and small, well-behaved animals may travel for free with the driver’s permission.  Animals may not sit on the seats.

Penalty charges 

You must have a valid ticket or pass for your journey.  If you don't show your ticket or pass when we ask, we may issue a penalty fare of up to £60.
